Brushed off verbal abuse

By January 3, 2019No Comments

On international coming out day 2017 my then partner and I were cycling through Groningen after an event with the feminist network and close to our house there is a bus stop and a group of teenage guys was standing there. They noticed us holding hands and started pointing at us, yelling things like “Flikker” and other stuff in dutch and although we didn’t understand it, it was quite clear that it was not well intended. I yelled back at them but we stayed on our bikes as we were outnumbered. When I talked to Dutch friends about what happened they kinda brushed off as “oh well that was in Vinkhuizen” (poorer neighborhood) which upset me.
