How might we amplify the voices of Black women to create safer, more inclusive public spaces?

We used our co-creative approach to facilitate a safe space for dialogue with Black women in Amsterdam about what they experienced within public spaces, what their key needs were and what they recommended as solutions.

This work was the first ever participatory research into the experiences of Black women with public safety in Amsterdam.

All recommendations to the City of Amsterdam originated from and were validated by the target group themselves.

Impact

  • Participants felt included in shaping solutions to challenges faced by Black women in Amsterdam’s public spaces
  • The City of Amsterdam prioritised inclusion of Black women’s experiences in their agenda to make public spaces safer – for everyone

What people say about us

"Studio in Between worked with Fairspace on an anti-racist project, one that was both challenging and fulfilling. The project was truly collaborative, and leveraged everyone’s unique expertise in a creative way. I appreciated the way Fairspace’s team worked with us to create a safe space for everyone involved to show up authentically, which was crucial given how challenging 2021 was for many people. Fairspace surpassed my expectations in their willingness to be vulnerable and accountable, and applied what they learned immediately which was evident in their decision making. I’m proud of what our team accomplished and grateful for the relationships that made it possible."
